🏧ATM Safety

Where to get cash without getting scammed

Cash skimming is the #1 fraud here

Card skimmers and "dynamic currency conversion" rip off thousands of tourists in Playa every month. Use a real bank ATM inside a branch, during business hours, and always choose to be charged in pesos (MXN) — never dollars.

✅ Safe — use these banks

Santander

Inside branch, daytime only. Reliable rates, lower fees.

BBVA

Inside branch. Mexico's largest bank, very reliable.

Banorte

Inside branch. Solid Mexican bank, fair fees.

HSBC

Inside branch. International bank, English UI.

Scotiabank

Inside branch. Reasonable fees, dependable.

⛔ Avoid — never use these

Euronet (purple/yellow ATMs)

Notorious for skimmers, terrible exchange rate (often 20%+ worse), and 'dynamic conversion' tricks. Avoid every single one.

Cajeros Inteligentes

Independent ATMs with no bank branding. High fees and known skimmer history.

Standalone ATMs on 5th Ave

Especially the ones inside small shops or kiosks — easy to tamper with overnight.

Any ATM at 1–4 AM

Skimmer install/swap window. Never use after dark on the street.

Withdrawal rules

  1. Use a bank ATM inside a branch — daylight only.
  2. If asked "with conversion or without?" — always pick WITHOUT (charge in MXN). Your bank's rate beats theirs by 5–10%.
  3. Cover the keypad with your other hand when entering your PIN.
  4. Wiggle the card slot before inserting — skimmers feel loose.
  5. Pull large amounts less often (4–6,000 MXN per trip) to limit fees.
  6. Notify your bank of Mexico travel before you fly so cards don't lock.
  7. Carry a backup card in a separate place from your wallet.
