Bioluminescence calendar

Glowing water 🌌

Tiny dinoflagellates flash blue when disturbed. Best on moonless nights in warm-water lagoons. The new moon on May 16–18 is a perfect window.

Holbox Island

Best Jul–Jan, faint year-round

Top spot on the peninsula. 4 hr drive + ferry β€” overnight trip.

Bacalar Lagoon

Year-round (faint)

3 hr drive south. Combine with a night kayak tour.

Punta Allen / Sian Ka'an

May–Oct on dark nights

2.5 hr from Playa. Book a guide β€” bumpy road, no lights.

Cozumel south coast

Occasional sightings on dark nights

Easiest day-trip from Playa. Take the late ferry back.

Bio is unpredictable β€” guides only book trips on nights with strong forecasts. Bring a swimsuit you don't mind getting wet at midnight.

Best spots by time of day

  • Sunrise: Mamita's or Coco Beach β€” sun rises over the water (east-facing coast = magic).
  • Sunset: rooftop bars on 5th Ave (sun sets inland), or head to Punta Esmeralda for water reflections.
  • Moonrise over the sea: any beachfront β€” it rises from the ocean. Magical on full-moon nights.
  • Stargazing: drive 20 min inland away from city lights, or head to Tulum / Sian Ka'an.
