💵Tipping Guide

Mexico runs on propinas

Service workers in Mexico are paid very low base wages — often $4–6 USD per day — and depend on tips to survive. When in doubt, tip more, not less. Cash (in pesos) is always preferred.

Who, how much

  • Restaurant server

    10–15%

Standard. 20% only for exceptional service. Check the bill — some places auto-add 'servicio'.

  • Bartender

    20 MXN per drink

    Or 15% on the tab.

  • Beach club waiter

    15–20%

They're hustling in the sun — be generous.

  • Housekeeping

    30–50 MXN/night

Leave daily on the pillow (different person each day). Not at the end.

  • Bellhop / porter

    20–30 MXN/bag

    Cash, before they leave.

  • Concierge

    100–200 MXN

If they made a hard reservation happen.

  • Tour guide (group)

    100–200 MXN/person

Per person, per day. More for private tours.

  • Tour driver

    50–100 MXN/person

    Separate from the guide.

  • Spa therapist

    10–15%

Cash if possible — they don't always get the card tip.

  • Taxi driver

    Round up

Tipping not expected — but rounding up is appreciated.

  • Gas attendant

    5–10 MXN

There are no self-serve stations. Always tip.

  • Grocery bagger

    5–10 MXN

Often kids or seniors working for tips only.

  • Street musician

    20 MXN

    If you stopped to listen.

  • Bathroom attendant

    5–10 MXN

If they hand you a paper towel.

Don't tip

  • Hotel front desk staff
  • Doctors / pharmacists
  • Government officials (it's a bribe)
  • Movie theater / bus ticket clerks

Quick reference

A reasonable daily tip budget for a couple at a villa, eating out, doing 1 excursion: ~500–800 MXN/day (~$30–45 USD).
